CONTEXT

CHB Sistemas, a company that has been in the market for more than 30 years, offers farm

management software that enables total agricultural control, from input management, planting, to production run-off

. The high demand for support services encouraged the company to seek help in finding and solving the problems that insisted on appearing to users, which were making the project unsustainable.

VISIBLE PROBLEMS

Initially, the data indicated that something needed a change, they pointed out big problems.
  1. Too many hours of training for each new user

    , which caused extra costs.
  2. High support service demand

    , due to usability failures.
  3. Dissatisfaction and high-stress level during the system use.

  4. Lack of smart and proactive information from the software regarding notifications and support to daily tasks on the rural management.

VISIBLE PROBLEMS

Inicialmente, números sinalizavam que algo precisava de mudança, e no geral estes eram os principais problemas:
  1. Too many hours of training for each new user

    , which caused extra costs.
  2. High support service demand, due to usability failures.

  3. Dissatisfaction and high-stress level during the system use.

  4. Lack of smart and proactive information from the software regarding notifications and support to daily tasks on the rural management.

IDENTIFIED PROBLEMS

The whole research was done through interviews, observations and video analysis of users interacting to the software, and a complete session of heuristic valuation, which revealed severe problems that affected the productivity of the staffs who worked directly to the software:
  1. Hostile Interface;

  2. Poor use of the interface, and bad distribution of the elements;

  3. Incoherent labels;

  4. Generic iconography;

  5. Overload of information;

  6. Navigation Problems;

  7. Main processes of the system presenting incongruous and incoherent flows;

  8. Lack of proactivity;

SOLUTION

For each problem found, solutions were presented:

1. Hostile interface:

Complete redesign, ambiance, colors, and refactoring aligned with the best usability practices;

2. Poor use of the interface, and bad distribution of the elements:

Information architecture: Grids, components, menu, resize of search interfaces and general responsivity;

3. Incoherent labels:

The labels were improved to inform exactly what it does, or what it is;

4. Generic iconography:

The icons were redesigned to express correctly what they represent;

5. Overload of information:

Each item on the interface was revised, many of them were considered useless or duplicated, and eventually, removed;

6. Navigation Problems:

Breadcrumbs were implemented;

7. Main processes of the system presenting incongruous and incoherent flows:

Main processes of the system presenting incongruous and incoherent flows: The information was logically arranged, and in some cases, were split into steps to reduce the complexity of the longer processes.

8. Lack of proactivity:

A customized dashboard was developed with panels and charts bringing useful and smart information, elicited from the user research;

DESIGN SYSTEMS

The components were customized to fit the most parts of the system, providing a

consistent visual

. The concept of Design Systems also allowed the modeling of patterns for registers and functionalities with similar behaviors.

CONCLUSION

The project had imediate repercussion among the users, which started to get in touch with the support service not to report problems, but to accomplish the

visual update on the software

.
We trully belive that with work, it is clearly possible to evolve a whole system and make it better day after day,

a useful

,

pleasing

and

practical system

.
